THREADS: Oral Histories from our LGBTQ Community

THREADS, the documentary film, was funded in part by a Welcoming Community Grant from the Heritage Fund - the community foundation of Bartholomew County as well as IUPUC and IUPUC Division of Liberal Arts.
PROGRAM:
Keynote Speaker: Rev. Dr. Stephen V. Sprinkle - Rev. Dr. Sprinkle is the author of "Unfinished Lives: Reviving the Memories of LGBTQ Hate Crimes Victims" and the Director of Field Education and Supervised Ministry, and Professor of Practical Theology at Brite Divinity School, Fort Worth, Texas. Hate Crimes in Indiana and Locally - Speakers representing the FBI and local law enforcement.
Micro-Aggression - Subtle, often automatic, stereotypical and often insensitive behavior or comments or assumptions about a person's identity, background, or ethnicity, or disability -- presented politely or negatively.
THREADS: Oral Histories from our LGBTQ Community - Viewing the documentary
Creating Change - Moderated discussion on how to build LGBTQ community and inclusion of Columbus LGBTQ citizens.
Refreshments will be provided.

The 15th Annual Empty Bowls event in Columbus will take place on Saturday, January 26 at 5:30pm at Central Middle School.
Local potters make bowls that people can purchase along with a meal of donated homemade soups and breads. The bowls remind us of how we can help when we come together --- last year this event was able to raise and donate over $14,000.00 NET to help combat hunger through Love Chapel, Human Services, Hope Community Center and Eastside Community Center.
EMPTY BOWLS brings together many community groups for one purpose
--- helping the hungry. The event is held at Central Middle School
with live music and raffle drawings.
Entertainment this year is provided by Tim Grimm and Jan Lucas-Grimm. Rhythm Conspiracy, a Taiko drumming group, will perform first.
Tickets can be purchased in advance at Viewpoint Books on January 2.
$20 for soup, bread, drink, & keepsake artisan bowl; $10 soup,
bread, drink ticket; $3 children under 10. Dessert available for $2

In honor of LGBT History Month (October) and National Coming-Out Day (October 11) members of the Pride Alliance Columbus, Indiana, Inc. (PAC) and the Inclusive Community Coalition (ICC) will be guest speakers at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation Service on October 7, 2012.
During the service they will be giving a very brief history of both groups and will talk about their joint participation in THREADS of our Diversity, a project to capture the oral histories of the LGBTQ community in Bartholomew County. If there is sufficient interest after the service, they are willing to remain on hand for a round table discussion about what it is like for LGBTQ people (and their allies) to live and work in Columbus and the surrounding areas.
Both PAC and ICC would like to thank the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus, Indiana for their invitation to help both groups fulfill their respective missions of community outreach and fostering dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity. As well as thank Heritage Fund Bartholomew County for their Welcoming Community grant contribution to the THREADS of our Diversity project along with IUPUC.

Third Annual LGBT Film Festival Coming To YES Cinema
Columbus, IN. When it first premiered in 2010, the Out Side Film Festival was the first film festival in Columbus, Indiana, to exclusively feature films from, about and for the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community. Now in its third year festival producers are happy to announce the 2012 Out Side Film Festival will be Saturday, February 18, 2012, at the YES Cinema.
Produced by Pride Alliance Columbus, the festival will include a diverse selection of documentaries, independent films, and feature-length movies. “Every year we work very hard to pick films that have a broad appeal,” says Stephen Dunning of the Pride Alliance. “We not only want festival goers to be entertained, but we would like them to be challenged with new ideas. That is why we include documentaries along with Hollywood-style feature-length movies.”
The film festival is broken up into five screenings on Saturday. Tickets are $6 per film, $15 for a three-film pass, and $25 for an all-day pass with in-and-out privileges. All tickets will be available at the YES Cinema box office on the day of the festival.
The festival kick-off event will be a screening of the documentary This Is My Journey at 1 pm. Written, produced and directed by Illinois filmmaker Kate Brickman, This Is My Journey explores the emotional aspects of transitioning for Dana, Shayla and Cris, three transgender people living in Central Illinois. Dana will be present at the screening and will participate in a Q&A with the audience immediately following the movie. The Inclusive Community Coalition is sponsoring this festival opening event.
One more film will be featured in the afternoon program: Undertow is an award-winning film from Peru and will screen at 2:45 pm. A dinner break is scheduled at 4:30 pm and the festival will resume at 6 pm with the documentary Out In the Silence by filmmaker Joe Wilson. The Canadian film Finn’s Girl will be presented at 7:15 pm followed by Hollywood to Dollywood at 9 pm.
Advanced tickets can be purchased at the YES Cinema box office (812-378-0377). Bistro 310 is offering menu discounts to festival goers. AIDS Action Group (AAG): Columbus, IN - Posted : 12/29/2011
The AIDS Action Group (AAG) program is a statewide network of grassroots organizations and individuals that provide HIV education in their communities. Step-UpIndiana (www.steupin.org) provides the funding, technical assistance, training and resources. AAG's mission is to help improve the quality of life for adults and youth living with HIV/ AIDS, to educate the community in order to decrease the incidence of HIV and STD infection, and to increase public's understanding of and compassionate response to HIV and AIDS. AAG offers services for persons living with HIV/AIDS, their families and loved ones, persons at risk for HIV, and the general public.
**There is an optional HIV Core training to become a certified HIV Educator. You don’t need to take the training to be a member of the AAG, however to do educational programs representing the AAG and have access to the educational materials, people are required to attend the one-day training. You would be certified through a collaboration with Step-Up Indiana, Indiana Department of Health, and Indiana Family Health Council.
If you’re interested in joining AAG, attending the HIV CORE training, or helping with hosting/ food for the training please contact:christina.bailey@ppin.org or call 812-376-0724. We need some volunteers to help with AM set-up & check-in, the lunch/ snacks, or to provide some financial assistance with purchasing the food. Thank you.
